Instagram, one of the most accessible platforms to showcase what you want people to see. So why not utilise it and create an account for your work? Put it out there for the world to feast their eyes upon. Having an Instagram account solely dedicated for your work can be an amazing way to establish your identity and show what you are bringing into the industry. Even though it has the potential to give you great exposure, as with anything it has its drawbacks. So, let’s explore if running a work account is really worthwhile.
Starting off with the benefits, how could it help with your future career?
The most obvious advantage is that it’s getting your work out there for everyone to see! Whether it’s other creatives or industry professionals, you never know who may take interest in what you have to offer.
- Helps build brand identity
As well as showcasing work, your account will also give people a feel of the personality behind your brand. It can help convey your values and show what you are most interested in within the industry. Eg. Are you a tech obsessed creative trying to predict future trends?
- Connects you with others
Pretty much everyone has an Instagram account these days, from magazine editors to other likeminded students. It’s such an easy way to interact and make little connections that may turn out to be worthwhile. Posting an image of a shoot you love on your story? Tag the photographers, stylists, anyone involved!
However, there are some negatives that you may need to keep in mind!
As much as it is great for others to celebrate your work, putting it out in the public eye could result in others copying aspects of your work. It’s not a nice feeling realising someone’s taken advantage of your hard work so be cautious!
- Comparison to others
You are going to come across other students who are also posting their creations, but don’t compare your capabilities and creativity to others! It’s easy to become critical of your own work when seeing so many other styles, but just remember that if everyone produced the same content Instagram would be a very boring place!
- Watching your likes and comment
Success is not measured by the amount of likes and comments you receive on a post. If one of your pieces of work isn’t gaining the same amount of likes as normal, it’s not because its unworthy. Social media success does not equate to how well you do in the outside world!
